Inspire Engineering Challenge

The Event

We are delighted to be able to pilot an engineering challenge with the RAF – did you see what we did there?

Vigilant 1440 is a new and exciting interactive educational exercise inspired by the Royal Air Force’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) typhoon squadrons, who are on 24/7 alert to protect the UK airspace.

The exercise recreates the energising atmosphere found on a front-line RAF base, to bring out the best in a mixed-ability classroom in a testing and rewarding way. It is a fast paced, employer led exercise, built on teamwork and communication that is enjoyable and reinforces the breadth of STEM employment opportunities that exist within today’s Royal Air Force.

Working in teams of 5, each student is given an individual engineering role. They must complete a series of tests and challenges in order to get the codes they need to enter into tablets to keep their aircraft ready to fly. It is vital that their aircraft are airworthy in case enemy aircraft is seen heading towards UK airspace.

This challenge is being tested with students at City of Oxford College, and it is hoped to extend this further in 2018/17.
