Hospitality and Catering Challenge

The Event

Working in teams of three, students are asked to design a restaurant concept, to include the following:

  • Name and concept
  • Location
  • Layout, Size and Design
  • Menu and Drinks Lists with prices
  • Basic business plan financial spreadsheet

The challenge is split into two categories:

  • Intermediate – Level 1 Students
  • Advanced – Level 2 and 3 Students

The judging panel will select teams from each category to take part in the Final. This panel will consist of:

  • Ashley Palmer-Watts, Chef Director, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
  • William Baxter CBE, Businessman and Chair of Hospitality Action
  • Mark Hastings, General Manager Dinner by Heston Blumenthal London
  • Gareth Sefton, SHW Kitchen design
  • Pauline Odulinski OBE, Chair of Inspire professionals

The Timeline

Tuesday 31st October 2017 – Entry forms and fees to be submitted

Friday 9th February 2018 – Submission deadline for entries

April 2018 – announcement of the 4 Finalists

June 2018 – Grand Final – date and venue to be confirmed

The Final

The final event, will see the top teams from each college bring their concept to life. They will all come together to produce and serve a dish from their menu that epitomises their restaurant concept and style.

They will serve this to the judging panel, and will prepare a table which will match the style presented in their original concept submission.

The event will end with the announcement of the overall winner of the challenge, and the presentation of awards.

The Prizes

The winning team will spend a day/a few days with Ashley at one/some of the Fat Duck Group restaurants, as well as receiving a trophy and certificate, with a trophy for the winning college.

The 2017 winning team were lucky enough to also be invited for lunch with the judges in the private dining room at Dinner.

All entrants will receive a certificate.

All finalists will receive a certificate to acknowledge their achievement.

The winner of each category will receive a trophy and certificate.
